Test your microphone and speaker inside the IllyVoIP app

Check microphone permission, input level and speaker playback in the IllyVoIP app before diagnosing a calling problem.

Use Microphone & audio test in the IllyVoIP app to check whether the app can receive sound from your microphone and play a local test sound. It is a useful first check when callers cannot hear you or you cannot hear them. The test does not place a telephone call, store your voice or upload a recording.

These instructions cover the Android app controls in version 1.0.46, build 272. Menu placement can differ in another release. You need access to the app, microphone permission and a quiet place where playing a short sound will not disturb anyone.

1. Finish any call and open the test

  1. Finish the current call before testing. The test is unavailable while a call is active; it also stops if a call begins.
  2. Open Account, then Microphone & audio test.
  3. Connect the headset you intend to use before starting. Check that the phone and headset are not muted, and set a comfortable playback volume.

Stay on the test screen. Moving the app into the background or leaving this screen stops the microphone test, so a stopped meter after switching apps does not by itself indicate a microphone fault.

2. Check microphone input

  1. Tap Start test. If Android asks for microphone access, allow it for the app.
  2. Speak normally into the microphone you intend to use. Watch for the input level to respond while you speak and settle when you stop.
  3. Tap Stop when you have enough information. Avoid tapping or blowing into the microphone; ordinary speech gives a more useful check.

A moving level shows that input is reaching the local test. It does not prove that a remote party receives audio. The test does not record a clip for playback, so there is no saved voice recording to find afterward.

3. Check speaker playback

  1. Tap Play test sound. Starting playback stops the microphone test so you can check one direction at a time.
  2. Listen on the phone or connected accessory at a comfortable volume.
  3. Answer the displayed question about whether you heard the sound. That answer is your observation, not an automatic measurement of the headset.

Starting another microphone test stops the test sound. If you change accessories, repeat both checks. Bluetooth playback and in-call audio can use different routes; hearing the local sound is useful evidence but does not guarantee the same route during a call.

If the microphone does not respond

  • If permission was denied, follow the permission prompt. When Android no longer offers that prompt, use the offered Open settings action and allow microphone access in the app permissions. Return and start the test again.
  • Check the headset hardware mute and connection. Disconnect the accessory and repeat with the phone microphone to narrow down where the problem occurs.
  • If the level stops after an incoming call or after leaving the screen, finish the call or return to the test before starting again.
  • If neither microphone works, record the app version, Android version, permission state and accessory model for Support. Do not send a private voice recording just to report a non-moving meter.

If the sound is missing, or calls still have no audio

Check output volume and the connected accessory, then repeat using the phone speaker. If both local tests work but a call still has one-way or missing audio, move to call-specific troubleshooting: note whether the problem affects incoming calls, outgoing calls or one destination, and keep the time and Portal call reference. Network routing and call media negotiation are separate from the local device tests. A successful local test alone is not evidence that either is working.
