Use this guide to connect a Grandstream WP826 Wi-Fi handset directly to IllyVoIP. First establish its Wi-Fi connection, then add the SIP account. Those are separate steps: a Wi-Fi symbol does not mean the phone is registered for calls.
The interface references follow Grandstream's WP816/WP826/WP836 administration guide, reviewed October 8, 2026, with this walkthrough scoped to WP826. Your installed firmware may show different login prompts. If the handset belongs to a managed PBX, configure the PBX extension rather than placing provider-trunk credentials on it.
1. Prepare the handset and line
Charge the handset, obtain the correct Wi-Fi network credentials and identify an unused SIP account slot. Keep existing settings if the phone is already in use. Ask the administrator whether centralized provisioning controls it.
- In IllyVoIP, open Services → SIP Lines and select the identity intended for the handset.
- Confirm password authentication and securely obtain the SIP username and SIP password.
- Under Technical endpoints, note the regional server, destination port and transport.
- Review the line's audio mode, caller-ID policy, required verification and calling balance.
Do not use your Portal email/password in place of SIP credentials, and do not change an active line from IP authentication without reviewing its other users. See the SIP line guide if you need a separate identity.

2. Connect to the intended Wi-Fi network
- On the handset, open Settings → Wi-Fi Settings.
- Enable Wi-Fi. Review the Wi-Fi Band setting if your network administrator has specified a band.
- Open Wi-Fi Network and select the intended network.
- Enter its password where required and wait for the connection.
- Open Status → Network Status → IP-info to confirm that the handset has an address on the expected network.
A guest network may allow internet access while isolating devices or restricting voice traffic. A network that requires a browser sign-in can also need special handling. Use the network approved for the handset instead of repeatedly changing the SIP password.
For the initial call test, stay near an access point with a reliable signal. After the basic setup works, check the places where the handset will actually be used. Do not assume a call made beside one access point proves uninterrupted movement across the building.
3. Open the web configuration page
- Connect your configuration computer to the same trusted network as the handset.
- Enter the handset's IP address in a browser.
- Sign in as the device administrator using the login process shown by your firmware.
- For a first-time login that displays a verification code in the browser, enter that code on the physical handset and complete the administrator-password setup.
The current manufacturer guide documents that physical-handset verification flow. Previously configured firmware may request the administrator password directly. Do not factory-reset a working phone merely to obtain a different login screen.
If web access is disabled by policy, the administrator needs to review Security Settings → Web/SSH Access and the Web Access Mode setting. This is local management access, not a SIP transport setting. Keep management on trusted networks.
4. Enter the IllyVoIP account
Open Account x → General Settings and its Account Register section. Select the account you intend to use.
| WP826 field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Account Active | Enable the selected account; do not assume an unused slot is already active. |
| Account Name | A label that makes the line easy to identify. |
| SIP Server | The regional hostname and required destination-port format from Technical endpoints. |
| SIP User ID | The selected line's SIP username. |
| SIP Authentication ID | The authentication identity for that line, normally its SIP username. |
| SIP Authentication Password | The SIP password, not the Wi-Fi or Portal password. |
| Name | An optional display name. Caller-ID authorization remains controlled by IllyVoIP. |
Leave secondary-server and proxy fields unset unless they are part of your supplied connection arrangement. Avoid changing unrelated UCM settings for a direct IllyVoIP account.
5. Match transport and media protection
In the selected account's SIP settings, choose the SIP Transport specified for your connection. For TLS, use the hostname and configure the supported certificate checks; keep the phone's date and time accurate.
Review SRTP Mode and SRTP Key Exchange in the account's audio settings. The WP8x6 guide distinguishes SDES and DTLS. Choose a mode that matches your IllyVoIP SIP line and is completely configured on the handset; the availability of a selector alone does not prove the connection is ready.
Standard RTP is unencrypted. TLS signaling does not independently encrypt call audio. Use mutually supported codecs and check the telephone-event/DTMF settings if calls will interact with menus.
Click Save and then Apply as the interface requires. Wait for the result. If a reboot is requested, arrange it outside active calls.
6. Confirm registration and account selection
Check Status → Account Status for the configured identity, either on the handset or in its web interface. The registration state belongs to an account, not to the Wi-Fi connection generally.
If other accounts are present, select the IllyVoIP account deliberately when dialing. A failed call through a different account tells you little about the one you just configured. If saved settings later change, ask whether a provisioning server manages the device.
7. Test at the desk and around the premises
- Check the destination rate and make an outgoing call to a number you control. Use the intended international format and note which account is selected.
- Confirm speech in both directions, the caller ID and any required menu-digit input.
- Route an active IllyVoIP incoming number to the same SIP identity and call it externally.
- Verify ringing and answering with the handset idle in its normal daily state, not only while the configuration screen is open.
- Repeat a controlled test in normal working locations. If trouble occurs only after moving or when signal is weak, record that distinction for the network administrator.
Tests may incur call charges. Registering the handset does not set the incoming number's destination. Use incoming-number instructions and caller-ID settings for those tasks.
8. Troubleshoot one layer at a time
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| No Wi-Fi address | Network name, password, coverage and network-access policy. |
| Wi-Fi works but administration does not | Same-network access, client isolation, correct IP and web-access policy. |
| SIP account fails to register | Account Active, credentials, server, transport and final error message. |
| Registered but call rejected | Selected account, dialed digits, balance, calling permissions and caller ID. |
| Incoming call does not ring | Number routing, account status, Do Not Disturb, forwarding and ringer volume. |
| Audio breaks only while moving | Location, access-point transition, signal and network load; avoid resetting working credentials. |
Provide Support with model, firmware, time/timezone, network type, the affected direction and a public call reference from call reports. Hide Wi-Fi passwords and SIP credentials in screenshots.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a DECT handset?
This guide is for the WP826 Wi-Fi workflow. Do not follow DP-series DECT-base registration instructions for it.
Why can I browse the phone's page but not make a call?
Local web access, SIP registration and call authorization are different checks. Follow the account-status and outgoing-call steps rather than treating web access as proof of calling.
Should I copy the webphone's WSS settings?
No. Use the transport and audio settings suitable for this handset and your selected SIP line. The browser webphone's automatic configuration is a different connection.
